Approach
Instead of tracking every particle, statistical mechanics uses probability theory to describe ensembles of possible microstates. Quantities such as temperature and entropy then emerge as averages.
Reach
It provides the microscopic basis for thermodynamics. Its quantum form, built on quantum mechanics, explains phenomena such as superconductivity, and its mathematics reappears in information theory.
